Musikalisk trestegsraket i Fengersfors

Dal:um is a Seoul-based musical duo who challenges the sonic possibilities of Korea’s most well-known traditional string instruments: the gayageum (played by Ha Suyean) and geomungo (played by Hwang Hyeyoung). Ethereal and otherworldly, Dal:um creates a compelling soundworld that treasures subtle dynamics and the space between the notes.

Despite their apparent similarity, the gayageum and geomungo are surprisingly different from each other in structure, playing techniques and tone.

Dal:um show how innovative interpretations create a harmony of strong energy and beautiful voices of the two instruments. Dal:um’s beautifully balanced and expansive music is defined by inspired dialogue and creative paradox. They recently released the first album ‘Similar and different on Glitterbeat’s label imprint tak:til.

Ka Baird (New York)

Ka Baird is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist living and working in NYC. She is one of the founding and continuing members of the long running avant psych project Spires That In The Sunset Rise. Described by Jack Rose as a ”female Sun City Girls” STITSR have contributed a different slant to the New Folk movement by incorporating various avant-garde and world music influences into their music. Their sound has been compared to the Raincoats, Meredith Monk, Comus and Harry Partch. Their most recent album Beasts In The Garden was described by Marc Masters  as ”some kind of long-lost Terry Riley/Angus MacLise collaboration, equally devoted to divine repetition and centre-seeking ritual.”  Since 2001, they have released eight full length records and several side releases.

Since relocating to NYC in November 2014, Baird has set off in numerous directions apart from Spires with new collaborations as well as honing in on her own solo work. Her current work explores piano improvisation, electroacoustic interventions, extended vocal techniques, physical movement, and her unusual electronic manipulation of the flute. She released an album of piano improvisations through Brooklyn label Perfect Wave See Sun Think Shadow in November of 2015 and a tribute record A Love Supreme dedicated to John Coltrane through Chicago label No Index in January of 2016.

Reaching toward the ancient roots of music, Ka utilizes electronic manipulation (primarily using the flute as the sound source) to take the ear past preconception, combining the linearity of the physical with the abstraction of the cerebral, crafting textural rhythmic noise with lush operatic passages.

She has toured extensively both nationally and internationally with performances at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), MoMA PS1 (Brooklyn), Roulette Intermedium (Brooklyn), Issue Project Room (Brooklyn), Fridman Gallery, Cafe OTO (London),  and numerous festival appearances with Spires including TUSK (Newcastle, UK), Incubate (Tilburg, Netherlands), and Festival Of Endless Gratitude (Copenhagen, DK). She also co-runs the label and concert organiser Perfect Wave with Camilla Padgitt-Coles.

Avalanche Kaito (Burkina Faso/Brussels)

In 2018, a Burkinabe griot meets the Brussels noise post-punk duo Le jour du seigneur. It’s a completely new alloy and it’s also a huge opportunity to deconstruct knowledge and create a brand new playing field. After a few adventures in the scenes of the European underground, singer / poly instrumentalist Kaito Winse and drummer / pure dataist Benjamin Chaval (Bargou 08, Le jour du seigneur) invite Nico Gitto (Facteur Cheval, Zoft, Why The Eye ?) on guitar. They will develop a crazy universe between experiments without a net and incredible postmodern grooves. This is truly the world as it is: a world of travelers who meet. Like Kaito, they can both claim to be guardians of tradition and curious about all combinations. Others, like Benjamin or Nico, are more the kind of multikulti. They share a desire to reinvent. They are ready to follow the backwater where it will move according to climate changes. It’s a world of movement and too bad for those who are afraid. They’ve recorded an album in October 2020, to be released via GLITTERBEAT on 7th June 2022.

The trio mostly play Kaito’s compositions, each making sure to write their part very freely. At the end all compositions are collective. The griot handles proverbs. These are the pillars of wisdom. He can both murmur and harangue, while his intense flute solos come straight from a free jazz he never knew. Nico brings this very rare quality of being both able to ensure the groove of a very uncommon rhythmic barytone guitar  and develop sophisticated sound experiences. Benjamin plays his destroy drums with two cut pieces of brush handle. Also he provides an important Pure Data electronic part partially controlled by triggers, a real fourth wheel to the coach.

Monokultur (Göteborg)

 (Gbg, Mammas Mysteriska Jukebox)
Monokultur was started in 2018 by Elin Engström and Julius Pierstorff, the project was a way to try out a more experimental approach to songwriting compared to Skiftande Enheter. Instead of one person writing songs that then was orchestrated by a band monokultur is more about letting the process determin how the song will turn out. A big inspiration for starting the project was the vital experimental scene that is currently existing in Gothenburg, centered around labels like Förlag För Fri Musik and I Dischi Del Barone as well as bands like Blod, Neutral and Amateur Hour.

Liis Ring (Tallin/Fengersfors)
